Radio Control

There are a number of ways to use radio control with 4QD controllers and in this article we look at the various options. Note: all the methods below only give control of speed and direction. If RC control of horns or lights etc is required, then RC relays can be used.

Pro-100 / 160 / 360

  • These models can all be connected directly to a hobby radio control receiver.
  • Forward / reverse control either in joystick [centre-off] or single-ended mode. If using single-ended mode, a RC relay will be needed for reverse.
  • Can be switched between RC and wired control by using the Alternate Profile input.
  • If dual channel mixing is required for two controllers, this can often be done in the transmitter, otherwise a Y-tail mixer can be used.

DNO / Pro-120 / 150

  • These models can be connected to either the DMR-203, or the DHB-202 as follows….

DMR-203

  • Replaced in 2025 by the DMR-203S.
  • This interface has two independent channels. Each channel will convert a RC receiver signal into a drive signal for a DNO or Pro-120 / 150 [or the older 4QD-200 / 300].
  • The two channels can either be independent, or the inputs can be mixed together by the DMR to allow a twin axis joystick to control the drive and steering of e.g. a model tank.
  • The DMR does not provide power to the RC receiver, this must be supplied via an external battery pack.

DHB-202 [now called double heading / RC board]

  • This interface was designed to allow either wired or RC control of two separate controllers.
  • It can also be used as a convenient way to switch between wired and RC control of a single DNO / Pro-120 / 150 model.
  • It can work with either centre-off or single-ended throttle operation.
  • Selection of the mode and input source is done via switches that are read at switch-on.
  • Includes a 5V BEC supply for the receiver.
  • The two output channels can operate in the same direction, or in opposing directions. The inputs cannot be mixed.
