Power Connectors

Both Powerpole and S50 types are 'hermaphrodite' - two identical connectors mate with each other. They are sold as individual shells with separate contacts: to make a mating connector you will need (for each wire) two shells and two contacts.
Plastic body shells latch together by tongue and groove to make up 2, 3, or more way.
Contacts supplied separately. After crimping to the cable these should be inserted into the shell where they are retained by a spring tongue.

The connectors are designed for continuous use.

Power Crimp Connectors

Crimp

If you prefer, we offer a range of Pre-crimped power leads. But, if you prefer to make your own leads, we can supply crimp connector. Be warned that a proper power crimp does require a proper crimp tool - this is especially true of the F-type crimps. We strongly suggest you purchase pre-assembled leads, but for those that must make their own leads, with care it is possible to crimp the F-type (pushon) crimps with a pair of pliers and then solder them. However - such a connection is never as reliable as a properly made crimp and we do not guarantee the results: we have seen Pro-120, Sco-120 and Sco-180 boards burned to destruction from badly made crimps. We advise against such practises!

The uninsulated ring connectors can usually be crimped satisfactorily with a hammer and a suitable anvil!

The picture illustrates the various types of crimp available. All are sold in packs of ten crimps.
Pushon (F-type - because of the F shaped dual crimp, for connection and cable support) crimp packs, FCB-600 and FCB-900, include ten boots.

Control Connectors

CONI connector

Picture: diags/coni.gif
An economic, robust, 3 pin connector for 'knock down' serviceability - very useful with any throttle. When installed with boots and 3 core cable, the joint can be sealed with PVC tape to make the assembly highly water resistant.
Pins and sockets are crimp type (similar to a small F-type crimp), so we normally supply pre-crimped but will supply separately (if you have a suitable tool).
Pins fit in the long part (male shell), sockets fit the female shell. Can be supplied pre-crimped to plunger pot or bell throttle assembly.

Bulgin 6 way connector

An excellent low cost 6 way connector set. It has a groove and ridge for positive and firm mating, yet is forgiving of incomplete insertion. It is plastic bodied and has wide pin spacing so is forgiving of dirt, debris and water. However it is not officially 'water proof'!

RFK IDC connectors

We like these connectors so much - we use them on all our products. The connector are 'insulation displacement' type - simply poke the wires into the wire grip, and squeeze closed in a vice or with parallel jaw pliers. No need to strip the insulation - this is displaced as the teeth of the connector bite through to contact the conductor. We have used these for many years: they are extremely reliable and require no special tooling. Unless someone has simply used the wrong wire size, no problems! The first diagram shows the 4 way connector, open. Beside it is a 3 way with the wire grip removed to show the connector teeth, which are in two rows, so making 4 separate connections through the insulation.

Wire Sizes

The IDCs must be used with the correct wire gauge. Acceptable wire sizes for the standard connectors are:

We can also supply these connectors with smaller teeth, for 0.14mm² wire. Please enquire.

The second picture shows the three common ones we use on our controllers. Also available are the mating PCB parts, vertical mounting, as shown for the 6 way, right.

These are offered as spares and replacements. However - we can quote for quantities of any connector of this range from 2 way to 14 way (and more).

RFK - Crimp connectors

The IDC (above) must use the correct gauge of stranded wire ( 7/0.2mm²) but there is a crimp version. The drawing shows the crimp contact and the 3 way shell. The crimp will take a wider range of wires that the IDC. However - the crimp version is actually an earlier design than the IDC and the dimensions were changed during the re-design so, although the contacts mate properly, the retaining latch does not engage. We can supply these crimped to wire, on, for instance, the plunger pot and the twist-grip throttle.
